Monday 11th February 2025 – Anonymous 3 To: Scrutiny Communications <Scrutiny@gov.je> Subject: Mobile phones in Schools

Dear Sir/Madam

I would like to add my voice to many other parents who feel that mobile phones do not have a place in schools on our island.

Whilst I agree that children may wish to have a phone on the way to and from school and my own children have phones, I do not believe they're necessary to aid learning as schools here are well provisioned with computers and tablets as needed.

Victoria college have started a policy whereby phones are locked in lockers from morning to when school finishes. It works well and has promoted socialising and important communication skills amongst the boys and mitigates detrimental behaviour that phones can promote such as filming every interaction and sharing people's mistakes/bullying behaviour.

I hope scrutiny can promote a serious discussion within our government and utilise some of the multitude of evidence that is now available that points to the very real risk that constant mobile phone usage by our young people can bring. Lets at least give them the school day where they do not have the pressure of all that a smartphone

can bring them.

Yours sincerely [redacted]
