Wednesday 12th February 2025 – Anonymous 5 To: Scrutiny Communications <Scrutiny@gov.je> Subject: Adding our voices: Smart phones in schools
To whom it may concern,
We would like to add our voices as concerned parents of a son who will embark on secondary school in a year or so. Our son enjoys gaming and his time is fairly regulated at home. He does not currently own a phone. We strongly feel that screen time management is difficult enough outside school, without these issues filtering into learning and socialising time.
We implore you to implement a full ban on phones during the school day, including break times. We understand the need for phones after school to communicate with parents and peers, but during school hours, they are there to be educated, not distracted and addicted. As well as improving the well-being of all students, we feel that an overall ban during school hours would also benefit teaching staff, who could then get on with teaching rather than wasting time monitoring students and enforcing rules around phone usage. We can only imagine how frustrating this must be for teachers.
Yours sincerely, [redacted]
