Opportunity for young Islanders to represent Jersey in Trinidad and Tobago
10 August 2022
The States Assembly is looking for two Islanders aged 18-29 to represent Jersey at the 11th Commonwealth Youth Parliament in Trinidad and Tobago on 20 – 24 November 2022.
The Commonwealth Youth Parliament is designed to demonstrate to young aspiring parliamentarians the role and purpose of parliaments as institutions for democracy and good governance. It also offers attendees a valuable opportunity to network with other participants across the Commonwealth, develop their experience and leadership skills, and make a positive difference in shaping the future of Jersey.
During the Youth Parliament, participants will have the opportunity to take part in parliamentary procedures as party representatives or independents; debate controversial issues and face the media in a 'mock' media conference.
Jersey participants in the Commonwealth Youth Parliament should:
- be in the age range 18-29 years (at the time of the event)
- be confident and articulate enough to take an active role in the Youth Parliament
- have an interest in the Commonwealth and political affairs
- have potential leadership qualities such as an ability to effect change
Deputy Carolyn Labey, Chair of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association in Jersey, says, "If you're interested in politics, are aged 18-29, have a keen commitment to our local community and a desire to develop your career, we welcome your application to this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. Whether you aspire to become a politician or not, we are looking for two confident and articulate individuals who take pride in their Island and want to play an active role in the Youth Parliament while representing Jersey on a global stage. The two successful candidates will have the opportunity to develop international contacts with future and current politicians from around the Commonwealth."
