1. Watch States Assembly meetings from the Public Gallery

The gates will open approximately 30 minutes before the meeting begins.

The best view of the Chamber is from the front and either the left or right sides of the gallery.

The entrance can be found at the top of Halkett Place in St. Helier next to the traffic lights. Please read our 'Accessibility' and 'Watching from the Public Gallery' information, regarding access and guidance for watching.

2. Watch States Assembly meetings online

If you are unable to watch in-person from the Public Gallery, you can watch States Meetings online, or on social media via X or YouTube.

3. Join us for a public tour of the States Chamber and Royal Court

Join a behind-the-scenes tour of the States Chamber and the Royal Court (the principal Court of Justice in Jersey). During your visit you will hear all about the history and inner workings of the Royal Court and States Chamber from accredited Blue Badge Guides.

Tours typically take place on a Saturday morning, once per month between March and October. Each tour is two hours long, and you will have the opportunity to ask questions throughout. A full list of dates and booking details are available on Eventbrite and incur a small charge fee.

4. Organise a school, Corporate or Community Tour

Organise a tour for your school, corporate, charity or community group. We request a minimum of 10 people (maximum of 25 people) per tour. This can be arranged by emailing [email protected].

Here’s everything you need to know before you visit.

Public Gallery Access
Please note that there are three external steps up to the entrance of the Public Gallery, then a further 40 internal steps that lead up to the Public Gallery, via a steep, winding staircase. Unfortunately, there is no lift access to the Public Gallery, as the States Chamber is situated within an historic building. The gates will open approximately 30 minutes before the meeting begins.

States Chamber and Royals Courts Access
Everybody is welcome on the public tours; however, they are not suitable for those in larger wheelchairs due to the Royal Court and States Chamber being situated within an historic building with limited doorway size and some restricted openings. The tour involves walking 42 steps up and 38 steps down. There is a lift available for your comfort to access all main areas. However, in the event of a fire, the lift would be unavailable, therefore visitors need to be able to use the stairs to exit the building.

Assistive Audio System
There is an assistive audio system installed in the States Assembly building to aid people with a hearing impairment to listen to States Assembly or Scrutiny meetings taking place in the States Chamber and Scrutiny Meeting Rooms. The system is an infrared hearing system. Any person with a hearing impairment can use one of the supplied headsets or request a receiver device to use with their own compatible hearing aid. The headsets and receiver devices are available from the States Assembly building reception desk (Royal Court entrance) and are supplied free of charge.

Emergency Evacuations
In the event of an emergency evacuation, a fire alarm will sound. A member of staff will guide you to your nearest exit.
Members of the public are welcome to watch States Assembly meetings from the public gallery of the Chamber.

If you arrive before the meeting begins please remain standing until the Presiding Officer (the Bailiff or Deputy Bailiff) has taken their seat. The arrival of the Presiding Officer will be announced by the Usher. You are also required to stand when the Dean leads the prayers, in French, and when the meeting adjourns and the Presiding Officer leaves the Chamber.

When visiting the Chamber, please remember to abide by the following rules:
- No food or drink
- No photography or videos
- Mobile phones to be switched off or on silent
- Be as quiet as possible when entering and leaving
- Do not comment on or interrupt the proceedings
The Presiding Officer may ask the Usher to escort you from the public gallery should you not respect these rules.

Public Gallery
There are no public toilets located in or directly accessible from the public gallery of the States Chamber.

States Chamber Meeting rooms
Toilet facilities for visitors attending meetings in the States Chamber are available within the States Assembly building complex, although, public access is restricted and integrated into an historic building with specific access limitations.

Bus

To get to the Royal Square, where the States Chamber is situated, by bus, take any island-wide or TownlInk bus route that stops at Liberation Station, St. Helier.

From Liberation Station, the Royal Square is a 5-minute walk. Head east toward the town centre, walk up King Street or Queen Street, and follow the signs toward the Royal Square.

The walk is step-free, although the square itself features traditional stone paving and cobbles. All LibertyBus vehicles are low-floor and wheelchair accessible.

Taxi

The closest public taxi rank to the Royal Square is located just a short walk away at Library Place (opposite the Royal Square).

Parking

The closest public car parks to the Royal Square in St Helier are Minden Place Car Park, Snow Hill Car Park and Pier Road Car Park, all within a short walk.

Cycle

Bicycle parking is available directly adjacent to the Royal Square. You can find all bike rack locations in the Jersey cycle rack map.
