States Assembly celebrates World Parliament Day
28 June 2023
This Friday, 30 June, is World Parliament Day and the States Assembly is marking the occasion by reminding Islanders of the various ways to get involved with the work of Jersey's elected parliament. Just over a year has passed since the Island's last election and it's important to remember that there are many ways for people to have their say and participate throughout the four-year political cycle.
World Parliament Day – also known as the International Day of Parliamentarism – is celebrated every year on 30 June, the date in 1889 on which the Inter-Parliamentary Union was founded. The Day was established in 2018 through a United Nations General Assembly Resolution.
Every day from Monday 26 June to Friday 30 June, information on a variety of ways that Islanders can engage and keep informed with parliamentary business will be shared on the States Assembly's official social media accounts.
People in Jersey can participate with the work of the States Assembly by:
- Contacting the States Members in their constituency or Parish
- Sharing their views with Scrutiny
- Starting or signing a petition
- Attending a drop-in surgery
Keep up to date and learn more about the States Assembly by:
- Watching a States meeting or Scrutiny hearing online or in person
- Join a guided tour of the States Chamber
- Catch up with States meetings and Scrutiny hearings online
Jenny O'Brien, Head of Digital and Public Engagement at the States Greffe said: 'Communities with high civic participation are healthier and happier, so it should be no surprise that we'd like Islanders to be engaged and participating with the States Assembly throughout the political cycle – and not just at election time. World Parliament Day is an excellent opportunity to remind people how they can take action and use their voice to ensure that the Assembly is working effectively and in their best interests.'
