Public Business
Deputy Sam Mézec proposed that the Residential Tenancy (Jersey) Law 2011 should be either amended or replaced. This would provide for rent control measures to be introduced and for the abolition of 'no fault evictions'.
Deputy Mézec also proposed an amendment to his proposition and asked that his proposition be debated as amended. The amendment would remove the proposed ban on rent increases during the first 3 years of tenancy and would instead limit rent increases to no more than once a year.
The States Assembly voted separately on each part of Deputy Mézec's proposition. They voted to reject parts A and B of the proposition. Part C, which sought to establish a body such as a Rent Tribunal to adjudicate housing disputes, was approved, with 22 votes for, 20 votes against, and 1 abstention.
