SOLID WASTE STRATEGY (P.95/2005): COMMENTS

Presented to the States on 5th July 2005 by the Finance and Economics Committee

STATES GREFFE

COMMENTS

The Finance and Economics Committee has worked closely with the Environment and Public Services Committee during the development of the Solid Waste Strategy, both at a Committee level and through representation on the Waste Strategy Steering Group. The Strategy includes major spending proposals that have been the subject of consideration and challenge by the Committee. The Committee understands the urgent need to progress the works identified within the Strategy and supports the expenditure proposals.

The replacement of the existing Energy from Waste plant is inescapable. It is essential that the eventual solution provides a value for money solution and secures a disposal route for solid waste that is totally robust and does not expose the public to financial or other risks during its operation.

The Committee supports the forthcoming States Business Plan, which includes proposals to meet the cost of the necessary capital works from within the proposed capital programme.

The Committee acknowledges the responsibilities placed on it by the proposition and assures States members that it will work closely with the Environment and Public Services Committee to determine the most appropriate and cost-effective solutions for the Island.
