REPORT
Whilst the States' top priority should indeed be to help those residents of the least means amongst us to cope with the increasing cost of living that Islanders are having to struggle with, it is also right that the States assists those businesses which have been struggling through the recession to stay afloat and to not face extortionate essential charges, especially when those charges could end up simply being transferred to the consumer in the end.
In particular, businesses in hospitality (hotels and restaurants, etc.) do not deserve to be hit by unjustifiable gas prices.
All of the figures demonstrated in Deputy G.P. Southern of St. Helier 's proposition are equally relevant to commercial gas tariffs, and so they should be lowered too.
Any extra money that businesses could save on their gas prices would provide them with more opportunities to reinvest in their businesses, take on more staff, reduce their prices or increase their workers' wages. All of these options are better than simply paying an unjustifiable price to our only gas provider.
Financial and manpower implications
There are no direct financial or manpower costs for the States arising from this amendment.
