1.1  Actual births

The number of actual births in Jersey in 2018 was 933.

This represents the number of babies born in Jersey between 1st January 2018 and 31st December 2018.

There were therefore 16 less births in Jersey in 2018 than in 2017.

98% of births in Jersey occurred in St. Helier , i.e. 913.

The number of registered births (including re-registrations of birth) in Jersey in 2018 was 962.

This represents the number of births which were registered between 1st January 2018 and 31st December 2018.

There were therefore 11 less registrations of birth than in 2017.

There were 4 stillbirths in the Island in 2018 – 2 more than in 2017.

  1. Marriage
  1. Marriage in Jersey

There were a total of 438 marriages in Jersey in 2018 – 9 less than 2017. This number includes civil marriage, marriage in the Church of England, and all other religious denomination marriage.

The Superintendent Registrar authorised 350 marriages in 2018 – i.e. civil and non- Anglican religious marriages. This is one less than in 2017.

There were 326 civil marriage ceremonies in Jersey in 2018 13 more than in 2017 i.e. 74% of all marriages in Jersey.

There were 112 religious marriage ceremonies 22 less than in 2017, i.e. 26% of all marriages in Jersey. Of these ceremonies

  • 88 marriages were conducted in Church of England churches 21% of the total Island marriages and 8 less than in 2017
  • 19 marriages were conducted in Catholic churches 4% of the total marriages and 12 less than in 2017
  • The remaining 6 marriages occurred in other denomination churches such as Methodist, Freedom and Kingdom Hall churches 2 less than in 2017.

The most popular venue for marriage ceremonies in Jersey in 2018 was the Register Office, where 157 ceremonies took place the same number as in 2017.

The most popular months for marriage in Jersey were August and September.

The number of couples who travelled to Jersey for the purpose of marriage by licence of the Superintendent Registrar was 68, i.e. 21% of all civil and non-Anglican marriages. The largest proportion of non-residents who travelled to Jersey to marry came from England, followed by Scotland and Australia. The most popular months for non-residents to marry in Jersey were June and August.

  1. Marriage of Jersey residents in other jurisdictions

The number of Jersey resident couples who applied to the Superintendent Registrar to marry in jurisdictions outside the Island was 25 30 less than in 2017. The most popular wedding destination for these couples was the United Kingdom.

  1. Conversion to marriage

Following amendments to the Marriage and Civil Status (Jersey) Law 2001 (which came into force on 1st July 2018), couples in valid civil partnerships are able to convert their civil partnership to marriage.

Between 1st July 2018 and 31st December 2018, 9 conversion to marriage ceremonies were solemnised in Jersey.

All 9 conversions to marriage were solemnised at the Office of the Superintendent Registrar.

  1. Outdoor locations for marriage

Following the amendments to the Marriage and Civil Status (Jersey) Law 2001 (which came into force on 1st July 2018), couples are able to marry in outdoor locations in Jersey.

Between 1st July 2018 and 31st December 2018, 38 marriages were solemnised in outdoor locations in Jersey 19% of all marriages authorised by the Superintendent Registrar during that period.

  1. Civil Partnership

In 2018, there were 7 civil partnership ceremonies in Jersey 8 less than in the previous year.

The most popular venue for civil partnership ceremonies was the Register Office – where 4 ceremonies took place.

The remaining 3 civil partnership ceremonies took place in other authorised civil venues around the Island.

No couples travelled to the Island for their ceremony – all were local residents.
