COMMENTS

The Deputy for St. Mary has proposed an amendment in 2 parts, both of which are consistent with the recommendations of the Sustainable Transport Policy (STP) and therefore have my support.

The significance of adding the words "eventual" to the "vision zero" target for serious road injuries relates to the need to establish more achievable targets in the shorter term. My STP makes clear that "vision zero" is a long-term target and proposes that the task group, which would be formed to analyse road injuries and identify road safety measures, would also advise on appropriate short-term targets (page 68 of the STP). The Deputy 's proposition therefore simply adds a requirement to inform the States of the target to be set and the rationale behind it.

The second part of the Deputy 's amendment will ensure that monitoring is related to the goals of the STP.
