COMPOSITION OF THE STATES: REDUCTION IN NUMBER OF SENATORS – REFERENDUM (P.198/2010) – AMENDMENT (P.198/2010 Amd.) – COMMENTS

COMMENTS

PPC strongly opposes the proposition of Senator Cohen suggesting that a referendum should be held in the coming months on the issue of Senators, and has set out its reasons  for  opposing  that  proposition  in  its  comments  (P.198/2010 Com.).  PPC strongly opposes this amendment for the same reasons.

If a referendum was held during the spring this year which included a question on Connétable s there would, as explained in PPC's comments on the main proposition, simply be no way to implement the decision if the electorate gave a clear signal in the referendum that they did not wish the Connétable s to remain as members of the States by virtue of their office. This would clearly be an unsatisfactory outcome for the electorate, who would justifiably wonder why the referendum question had been asked at this stage when implementation was some 3½ years away.
