Jersey and the slave trade P.78/2020

THE  STATES,  resuming  consideration  of  a  proposition  of   Deputy  Montfort   Tadier  of   St. Brelade entitled Jersey and the slave trade' (P.78/2020), rejected an amendment of Deputy Montfort Tadier of St. Brelade that, after paragraph (c) there should be inserted the following new paragraph –

"(d) to request the Chief Minister to commission work on the desirability and practicalities of

establishing an Equalities and Human Rights Commission in Jersey and to present a report to the States on the outcome of this work by 23rd August 2021."

THE STATES rejected paragraph (c) of the proposition to request the Chief Minister to commission, in conjunction with Jersey Heritage, the Jersey Community Relations Trust, Black Lives Matter Jersey and other potential stakeholders, an audit of all place names and memorials relating to former slave traders in Jersey, in order to inform work on understanding and explaining the full contribution of the slave trade to Jersey's history, with the outcome of the audit to be presented to the States no later than 23rd August 2021.

THE STATES, on the proposition of the Chair of the Privileges and Procedures Committee, resolved to sit in-Committee in order to discuss the e-petition entitled Write off income tax liability for prior year if moved to current year basis', which had attracted 5,100 signatures.
