Explanatory Note regarding subordinate legislation tabled at this meeting.
R & O 174/2001
The purpose of these Bye-Laws is to extend the Building Bye-Laws to include work undertaken on the provision, alteration or extension of the fixed electrical installation of a building. The only additional obligation the Bye-Laws impose in respect of such work (apart from the obligation to carry it out so that it provides reasonable protection against fire and is not a source of danger to people) is that on its completion a competent contractor must inspect and test the work and certify to the electricity supply undertaking that it complies with these Bye-Laws.
The opportunity has been taken to consolidate the Bye-Laws but without substantive changes.
The Bye-Laws were made on 6th December 2001 and in the main come into force on 1st January 2002. However the provisions that bring about the changes in respect of fixed electrical installations will not come into force until 1st September 2002.
