PROPOSITION
THE STATES are asked to decide whether they are of opinion -
to request the Public Services Committee to amend the Road Traffic (Public Parking Places) (Jersey) Order 1985, as amended, to delete La Mare Common Car Park, St. Clement from Part 3 of the Fourth Schedule.
SENATOR R.J. SHENTON
Report
The imposition of car parking charges on beach side areas is a disgrace to the States. In requesting the removal of parking charges from this popular beach side car park I am encouraging other States members to add their voice and present amendments of my proposition to take into account other car parks.
Our beaches are there to be enjoyed by locals and visitors alike and the car is an essential part of their beach enjoyment. Families with young children transport the play equipment and other matters to the beach in the knowledge that the children will be safe from passing traffic. The days when Jersey can boast of good beach weather are not that frequent, and on those glorious days when the sun is shining it is disgraceful to see parking tickets being issued to people using the main road because they resent the narrow-minded approach of the traffic authorities. The revenue gained from this commercial practice is a pittance compared to the ill-will that it causes amongst our own people and visitors to our lovely Island.
The present car parking charges which were introduced by the Road Traffic (Public Parking Places) (Amendment No. 36) (Jersey) Order 1998 (R & O No. 9220), are as follows -
- Every day, except Sunday, during the period 1st April to 30th September -
- Between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. For each two 35p hours or part thereof
- between 5 p.m. and 8 a.m. No charge
- Sunday No charge
- At any other time No charge
