THE STATES are asked to decide whether they are of opinion -

  I n a c c o rdance with Article 1A(2) of the Diseases of Animals (Jersey) Law 1956, as amended, to approve the

appointment of Mr. Michael Nicholls B.V.Sc. M.V.Sc. M.R.C.V.S., as the States Veterinary Officer.

Article 1A(2) of the Diseases of Animals (Jersey) Law 1956, as amended, provides that the Agriculture and Fisheries Committee appoint a veterinary surgeon to the post of Veterinary Officer. The appointment is subject to the approval of the States "who shall firstly deliberate in camera and then vote in public assembly by ballot". An absolute majority of the members present is necessary for such approval.

The appointment which is to replace Mr. N.M. Martin who is retiring, is on a five-year contract on a full-time basis, approximately 37 hours a week, based on the Civil Service Grade 15 salary scale. The post is pensionable.

Note: A n amendment to the Diseases of Animals (Jersey) Law 1956, as amended, which will remove the requirements for

States' approval of the appointment of the Veterinary Officer is currently awaiting sanction by Her Majesty in Council.
