PROPOSITION
THE STATES are asked to decide whether they are of opinion -
(a) to approve drawings Nos. 2235:98:115 to 121 showing the proposed Phase 2 extension to and refurbishment of La Moye School, St. Brelade;
(b ) to authorise the Greffier of the States to sign the said drawings on behalf of the States. EDUCATION COMMITTEE
Notes: 1. T h e Planning and Environment Committee approved these drawings under Development Permit No. 3246/N,
dated 7th June 2000.
2 . T h e Finance and Economics Committee supports this proposition, subject to the tender process delivering a
cost within the inflation adjusted budget for Phase 2 of the scheme.
Report
The number of pupils attending this school is currently just over 300 and is due to rise to slightly more than 350 by 2002/3. To cater for this growth and to provide suitable accommodation in which to deliver the modern Jersey curriculum, the Committee is extending and modernising the school in two phases. Although this will be less cost-effective than if it were done in one contract phase, given the congested layout of the existing school, the restricted site and the numbers of children involved, it was agreed that two distinct phases were necessary for the school to remain operational during the remodelling process.
The Phase 1 project, which included two new classrooms, extensions to and remodelling of six existing classrooms, a new library, new and larger toilet and changing areas, a music/general purpose room, a central glazed courtyard/atrium area, new and improved teacher's accommodation and a new boiler room and stores was completed successfully in July 1999.
The Phase 2 project includes two further new classrooms, a new nursery class, extensions to and remodelling of the remaining four existing classrooms, an extension to the school hall, plus the remodelling of the external play, landscaped and parking areas.
Subject to the additional funds being granted to meet general inflationary increases in building costs, in line with normal Finance and Economics Committee procedures, it has been confirmed that the Committee will have sufficient funds for this project within its capital budget, and therefore the Committee asks the States to approve these drawings now so that the project can proceed as soon as tenders are received.
