Report

After nine years in office, Don Filleul OBE has announced his intention to retire as Chairman of the Jersey Heritage Trust with effect from 24th July 2000, the date of the opening of the new Jersey Archive.

Under the constitution of the Jersey Heritage Trust, the Chairman is (para 5.3.1) -

appointed by the States of Jersey. The Chairman shall be appointed for a period not exceeding four years and may be re-appointed by the States of Jersey for one further period of four years giving a maximum period of eight years in which any one individual appointed under this sub-clause can serve as Chairman.

After due consultation with the trustees of the Heritage Trust, the Finance and Economics Committee has agreed that the Trust's current Vice-Chairman, Jurat John de Veulle, should receive the Committee's nomination as the new Chairman.

Jurat de Veulle served as the Trust's Honorary Financial Adviser from 1988 and has been one of the key people behind the Trust's successful development during this period, serving on various Trust sub-committees and giving support and advice in many other ways. Nominated by the Société Jersiaise, he was appointed a trustee under the new constitution from 1999 and was subsequently elected Vice-Chairman by his fellow trustees.

The new constitution of the Heritage Trust, approved by the States in 1999, provides for a board of up to twelve trustees who "shall be a diverse and balanced group of people in terms of gender, age, experience, skills, track record and attitudes, who share a commitment to the Jersey Heritage Trust." The current board was appointed following a public advertisement for prospective trustees in the Jersey Evening Post.

Jurat de Veulle has indicated that he is happy for his name to go forward.
