Report
Following a detailed and thorough feasibility study into the redevelopment and expansion needs of Grainville School, the Education Committee decided in 1998 that, in order to accommodate the predicted growth in pupil numbers and the changes in the Jersey Curriculum, a phased and mixed development with some new buildings and some refurbishment and remodelling of existing buildings should take place. The proposals for this overall redevelopment scheme are split into the following four phases -
Phase 1 New Science block 2000 Phase 2 New Art, Design and Technology block and 2002
limited remodelling within the central administration and special needs areas
Phase 3 Remodelling and upgrading of main 1970s 2004
school blocks
Phase 4 Upgrading of sports and theatre blocks 2006
The proposed new Science block will be constructed on the site of the former FCJ Convent building which was acquired by the States in 1998 and demolished in 1999 to make way for this new development.
The detached building will accommodate seven purpose-designed science laboratories on two floors, plus the usual associated resource, administration and storage areas.
Subject to confirmation of receipt of a fixed price acceptable tender later this week and to the Finance and Economics Committee granting additional funds to cover identified and agreed increased costs due to inflation, the Education Committee will have sufficient funds within its capital budget and the Committee therefore asks the States to approve these drawings and to permit the project to proceed as planned.
