Report

The Parish currently has three Centeniers who are on duty one week in three. A duty week lasts for seven days, from 8.00 p.m. on Friday until the same time the following Friday. During this period, the Centenier will deal with all matters referred to him, in addition to attending all Court sittings that week for which the Parish has cases listed. This, in particular, can be a heavy responsibility, particularly for those who have full-time work commitments in addition to their family responsibilities.

In comparison, the existing Parish complement of Vingteniers and Constable's Officers means that these officers are on duty only once every five weeks. The increase in the number of Centeniers will thus reduce the burden on those officers and bring it closer to the frequency of duty weeks for other Parish officers in the Honorary Police.

The approval of the post of a fourth Centenier will ease the pressure on those elected to this office, particularly when officers may be out of the Island on holiday or for business commitments, and to cover periods of sickness. The reduced burden may also encourage others to stand for office.

Explanatory Note

The purpose of this Law is to increase from three to four the number of Centeniers for the parish of St. John . In translation, the Law reads as follows -
