PROPOSITION

THE STATES are asked to decide whether they are of opinion -

to a g r e e that the Jersey portion of the profits of the Channel Islands Lottery during 2002 should be paid to the

Association of Jersey Charities for the benefit of the community and the charitable needs of the Island.

GAMBLING CONTROL COMMITTEE

Note: T he Finance and Economics Committee's comments are to follow.

Report

The Committee requests the support of the States to continue awarding the Jersey allocation of Lottery profits to the Association of Jersey Charities during 2002.

Last year saw profits of £217,237 given to the Association and this represents their main source of income. The Association now represents over two hundred member charities and undertakes a valuable function by considering and allocating funding to the best prepared and worthy projects put forward by its members.

Although sales of tickets for the C.I. Lottery have declined, the payment of the profits to the Association continues to fulfil a vital social need.

There are no financial or manpower implications for the States arising from this proposition.
