PROPOSITION
THE STATES are asked to decide whether they are of opinion -
to request the Harbours and Airport Committee to reconsider its decision to terminate the concession for the Albert Pier Café, St. Helier and the associated storeroom, and to request the Committee to renew the concession in order to allow the Café to remain in operation.
DEPUTY OF TRINITY
Report
In recent days there has been much concern expressed about the impending loss of the Albert Pier Café for reasons which leave much to be desired in my view and lack any real validity.
Why is it necessary to sweep away this small business which has great charm and provides a wonderful service to all manner of workers, other local residents, visitors and their families who enjoy the harbour and appreciate good simple fare at reasonable cost?
I cannot accept that this simple pleasure can be provided in anything like the same ambience in a modern café, quite apart from the extra cost of so doing. I am also certain that the future lucky residents of the new flats will enjoy the comings and goings of a busy harbour scene.
We are talking about the harbour, a working area, not a sailing pond in formal gardens. We are in serious danger of the harbour becoming a sterile area completely lacking in interest and fun and I urge the Harbours and Airport Committee to reconsider its decision.
There are no additional financial and manpower implications arising out of this proposition.
