THE STATES are asked to decide whether they are of opinion -
( a) to approve drawings Nos. 3001/W01 (Rev D), W02 (Rev H), W03 (Rev F), W04 (Rev C), W05 (Rev
W06 (Rev C), W18 (Rev C), W21 (Rev C), W23 Rev B), W101 (Rev C), W102 (Rev C), SK.06, SK. showing the proposed redevelopment of Grands Vaux Primary School, St. Saviour;
(b ) to authorise the Greffier of the States to sign the said drawings on behalf of the States. EDUCATION COMMITTEE

The existing Grands Vaux Primary School was constructed in 1967, of a prefabricated construction with a design life of 25 years. The design life of this building has been far exceeded, and significant funds have had to be applied over recent years to simply keep it wind and water-tight. Equally, due to its lightweight construction, the occupants of the building suffer from overheating in the summer and cold in the winter.
Following redevelopment of Nicholson Park and the associated reduction of family accommodation units in the area, the school's predicted pupil population should remain fairly stable over the next ten years.
Demolition of the existing school was completed in November 2001 and it is proposed to construct a new single-form entry primary school (i.e. for 175 children) and 30 place nursery on the site. It is anticipated that construction will begin in March 2002 and be completed in July 2003.
The design philosophy has been driven by its location within a rural setting on the periphery of an urban location. The school is located in a valley surrounded by mature trees, consequently the design approach has been to adopt the use of natural materials whilst ensuring their selection provides value for money, durability and minimal maintenance.
The capital funding allocated to the Committee within vote C2598, once adjusted for inflation, is expected to be sufficient to complete the project.
This proposition has no manpower implications for the States.
The Committee therefore asks the States to approve these drawings and to permit the project to proceed as planned.
