THE STATES are asked to decide whether they are of opinion

to a p prove the re-appointment of Mr. Robert Staddon as Chairman of the Jersey Council for Safety and

Health at Work for a period of 3  years with effect from 1st July 2007.

MINISTER FOR SOCIAL SECURITY

REPORT

The States are asked to approve the re-appointment of Mr. R. Staddon as Chairman of the Jersey Council for Safety and Health at Work for a 3-year period until June 2010. This will be in accordance with the Council's constitution which was approved by the States in July 1991.

Mr.  Staddon has been a Council member for over 15  years, serving as Chairman since November 2000. Th appointment process for the post of Chairman has been carried out in accordance with the Jersey Appointments Commission Code of Practice for Appointments to Autonomous and Quasi-Autonomous Public Bodies and Tribunals for a lower tier body.

Mr. Staddon continues to demonstrate a keen interest in seeking improvements in the arrangements for occupational health and safety in the workplace and, under his leadership, has led the Council through a process of change set out in the report prepared by the Council The Way Forward'. The Council has been involved in a wide range of activities aimed at raising awareness and improving health and safety performance including the provision of specialised training, working in partnership with others to advance the importance of health and safety and supporting the successful development of the Jersey Occupational Safety and Health Association.

The Council receives an annual grant to carry out its work and is required to submit an annual report and audited accounts to the States.

Mr.  Staddon is a Chartered Engineer and a Member of the Institute of Gas Engineers.

The appointment is an honorary position and this proposition, therefore, has no implication for the financial or manpower resources of the States.
