STATES OF JERSEY

CENTRAL MARKET: SUB POST OFFICE FACILITY – PETITION

Lodged au Greffe on 8th June 2010 by Deputy P.V.F. Le Claire of St. Helier

STATES GREFFE

2010   Price code: A  P.74

PROPOSITION

THE STATES are asked to decide whether they are of opinion

to note that 1,922 petitioners wish that the Sub Post Office in the Central Market remains open, and to request the Minister for Treasury and Resources, as representative of the shareholder in Jersey Post, to take the necessary steps to request Jersey Post to reconsider its position relating to the presence of a Sub Post Office facility in the Central Market.

DEPUTY P.V.F. LE CLAIRE OF ST. HELIER

REPORT

The Sub Post Office in the Central Market provides a valuable facility for customers. The customer base of the Sub Post Office is continuing to use the facility, even though the new Post Office in the Co-op has opened. I am sure that the facility in the Co-op is welcomed by the Society, as it too has customers whose needs are being met by this new service. There may be an argument that merits privatising all postal functions within Jersey, but this in my opinion would be ridiculous. There must be a continuing provision of these valuable services within the grand scheme of things as profit is not everything. The Sub Post Office provides for a variety of needs in our community. I will elaborate upon these in my speech to the Assembly when I debate the proposition.

I am hopeful that the Minister will listen to what I have to say and that the States will support my request, that Jersey Post reconsiders the closure of the Sub Post Office in the Market. There is little point in coming back to the States, to ask for our support, once all of the customer benefits have been removed from their business model. If they chose to do so in the future, they will not find the level of support for their business that they might otherwise enjoy.

Financial and manpower implications

There are no financial or manpower implications for the States arising from this Proposition.

APPENDIX

PETITION

TO THE PRESIDENT AND MEMBERS OF THE STATES OF JERSEY

Name of person(s) or body responsible for this petition –

Mr. Alvin Aaron

These are the reasons for this petition –

The closure of the Sub Post Office in the Central Market and the making redundant of its staff, plus relocating the Sub Post Office to the Channel Islands Co-operative Homemaker Store in Don Street, will cause inconvenience to its present customers and be detrimental to the Central Market trade as it will reduce the footfall through the Market. The existing Sub Post Office offers an invaluable and essential service to the public of Jersey.

We, the undersigned, petition the States of Jersey as follows –

We wish the Sub Post Office in the Central Market to remain open.
