STATES OF JERSEY
JERSEY ARTS TRUST: APPOINTMENT OF CHAIRMAN
Lodged au Greffe on 6th July 2010
by the Minister for Education, Sport and Culture
STATES GREFFE
2010 Price code: A P.95
PROPOSITION
THE STATES are asked to decide whether they are of opinion
to appoint Mr. Alan Le Breton as Chairman of the Jersey Arts Trust for a period of 4 years with immediate effect from the date of approval by the States.
MINISTER FOR EDUCATION, SPORT AND CULTURE
REPORT
Following completion of his second 4 year term as Chairman of the Jersey Arts Trust, Mr. Colin Perchard, CVO, OBE has come to the end of the maximum period of office prescribed by the Trust's constitution.
Consequently, the Jersey Arts Trust has advertised for expressions of interest in the chairmanship and it undertook a recruitment process last month. Following interviews conducted by a Panel comprising the outgoing Chairman with Mr. Gordon Fitzjohn (trustee), Mr. Brian Curtis (representing the States Appointments Commission) and Mr. Jeremy Harris (Assistant Director, DfESC), Mr. Alan Le Breton was unanimously recommended as the Trust's new Chairman. Accordingly, I now ask the States formally to endorse Mr. Le Breton's appointment.
Mr. Le Breton was educated at St. Clement 's School, Hautlieu School and Leeds University before embarking upon a distinguished career with the BBC in London which culminated in his appointment as Managing Editor of news and features for the BBC World Service. Since returning to the Island, he has taken an active interest in Island life in a number of different capacities and joined the Jersey Arts Trust in 2007. He is its current Vice-Chairman.
In proposing Mr. Le Breton for a 4 year term as Chairman, I should like to extend my thanks to the outgoing Chairman, Mr. Perchard, for his dedicated service to the Trust, and for his close work with the DfESC, successfully steering the Trust through the changes set out in the Cultural Strategy. I have been delighted to note the many exciting developments which have taken place recently, particularly in the Trust's relationships with local artists and writers, and with the other cultural bodies with which it works closely.
I am confident that the continuity afforded by Mr. Le Breton's confirmation as Chairman will allow the Trust to build on these successes.
A Curriculum Vitae for Mr. Le Breton is attached at the Appendix to this Report. Financial and manpower implications
There are no financial or manpower implications for the States arising from the adoption of this proposition.
