WRITTEN QUESTION TO THE MINISTER FOR TRANSPORT AND TECHNICAL SERVICES BY DEPUTY G.C.L. BAUDAINS OF ST. CLEMENT

ANSWER TO BE TABLED ON TUESDAY 1st JULY 2008 Question

With regard to the La Collette reclamation site, would the Minister advise:

  1. approximately, at current levelsof tipping, howmany years are left before it is full;

Answer

Based on infill rates to the end of 2007, and taking into account the volumes predicted from the two major Waterfront schemes, Castle Quay and the Esplanade Quarter, the site would be full to design capacity of 3.4 million cubic metres by 2017.

Question

  1. approximately howmanyofthoseyearsuse would be used up should allof the spoil excavated during the EsplanadeQuarterdevelopment find its way toLa Collette;

Answer

If none of the excavated material can be recycled, the volume of material equates to about 3.15 years of space in the La Collette II reclamation site.  Calculations indicate that with a recycling rate of between 20 and 40 % of the excavated material, the volume of material being deposited into the site would be equivalent to between 2.5 and 1.9 years respectively. From past experience of developing on the Waterfront, it is hoped that a higher recycling rate can be achieved.

Question

  1. whether he intends creating a new reclamation site when the presentoneis full and if so, where?

Answer

As part of the Draft Island Plan Green Paper that will shortly be going out to consultation, the future requirement for a new inert landfill site has been addressed and a number of options and sites are being put forward to gain public views.
