WQ.190/2024

WRITTEN QUESTION TO THE MINISTER FOR CHILDREN AND FAMILIES BY DEPUTY K.L. MOORE OF ST. MARY, ST. OUEN AND ST. PETER QUESTION SUBMITTED ON MONDAY 13th MAY 2024

ANSWER TO BE TABLED ON MONDAY 20th MAY 2024

Question

“Will the Minister provide an annual breakdown of the number of Jersey children that have been supported by a social worker since 2019, including the number of times their social worker has changed?”

Answer

We are unable to answer the question in full at this time as we do not currently report in the format requested. We would need to develop a bespoke report and test the quality of the data in order to respond in full.

We are able to provide the total number of children open to Children’s Social Care on a snapshot date as below:

Date

Total number of children open to CSC

31/12/2019

623

31/12/2020

478

31/12/2021

435

31/12/2022

551

31/12/2023

477

In addition, we report internally on the average number of social workers allocated to children who have been in the care of the Minister for two years or more. The data at the end of December 2023 showed that children in care for two years or more had on average:

1.8 social workers in the previous 12 months

2.5 social workers in the previous 24 months

NB: Changes in social worker do not only result from staff turnover; sometimes children’s social workers are changed in response to the child’s needs and wishes, or due to movement across teams as children transfer to different services.
