Dear Chair,

Recent Article in media regarding Sports Performance Strategy

I have noted your letter received on 21st December in which you make reference to an article in the Jersey Evening Post of 15th December regarding the Performance Sport Strategy.

I am sorry to hear that the Panel found the reporting to be objectionable, as you know we enjoy a free press in Jersey which is at liberty to report as they wish on the matters of interest to Islanders.

The article itself appears to provide a fair report of the debate except for the reference to a budget of £150,000 being allocated over four years rather than annually for each of the next four years – I understand that the JEP has subsequently corrected this small error.

For the record, neither I, nor any Government officer within either Economy or the Communications Directorate, spoke to or provided information to the JEP in regards to the article in question. The Panel will note that the quote used is simply taken verbatim from my comments in the States Assembly.

Should the Panel wish to challenge reporting in a specific media article, I would suggest that the appropriate avenue would be to contact the journalist or publication in question.

I would be happy to provide a briefing to the Panel on the Performance Sport Strategy should you have any questions on the Strategy itself.

Kind regards,

Deputy Lucy Stephenson
