Chair, Environment, Housing and Infrastructure Scrutiny Panel

11 April 2024

Dear Deputy Jeune ,  RE: Waste Sites

Further to the Panel’s letter dated 3 March 2024 regarding historic and current waste sites around the Island, I can respond as follows.

On the question about whether there is a map that shows the locations, there is not an up to date map. The Bridging Island Plan shows a limited number of waste site locations. A link to the map is found here.

Up to date mapping for waste sites is something that officers in the Regulation Directorate have told me would be a desirable operational tool. I will keep you informed on this. However, information on the descriptive locations of waste sites is available as below.

Historic waste sites

A survey carried out on behalf of the States of Jersey in 1997 by the British Geological Survey is attached. This document is entitled ‘The Landfill legacy in Jersey and the Risk to Surface and Groundwater’. An appendix in the report outlines the different Parish locations by site name / field number and a grid reference.

Current licenced waste sites

There is a list of licensed waste management sites (i.e. those that are currently licenced under the Waste Management (Jersey) Law 2005), available on the Government website. The link to the website can be found here.

Former licenced waste sites

In addition, there are a number of waste sites that have surrendered their licenses (having been licenced under the Waste Management (Jersey) Law 2005).

I hope that this is of use, however if you would like any further information please do not hesitate to write to me again.

Yours sincerely,

Deputy Steve Luce

Minister for the Environment
