1.  Youth Enquiry Service (YES Project): Site Visit

The Panel received a tour of the YES project and the facilities it provided at St James Centre.

The Panel received a PowerPoint presentation from the Senior Youth Worker which outlined services provided by the YES Project. It was noted that the Project offered confidential advice and information to young people as well as counselling services. It was noted that the main aims of the YES Project were:

  • Maintaining a high quality free information, advice, support and counselling service to young people aged 14 – 25;
  • Enabling young people to self-refer and voluntarily access the service;
  • Listening  and  supporting  young  people  in  making  informed choices and decisions;
  • Ensuring that workers were competent to perform the range and depth of duties offered.

The Panel noted that the Project offered low level counselling services (tier 1 or 2) and that in some cases referrals were made to the Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS).

The Senior Youth Worker explained that the Project advised on a range of topics which included:

  • bereavement
  • Income Support claims
  • legal issues
  • housing
  • employment

  • education
  • sexual health
  • drugs and alcohol
  • relationships

The Principal Youth Officer explained that the YES Project had provided a written submission to the Independent Jersey Care Inquiry which was due to publish its report by the end of March 2017. The Panel tasked the Officers to search the Inquiry's website for further submissions which may be relevant to the Panel's remit.
