Is the survey confidential?
Yes, the information you give will be treated as strictly confidential and will not be shared with anyone outside of the independent Statistics Unit.
Information you provide will only be used to provide aggregate (grouped) statistics, so that no person or household will be identifiable in the results.
Ensuring all people are represented
As it's not cost-effective to ask everyone living in Jersey to take part in the survey, a sample of addresses is selected to represent the entire Island. Your address is one of these and was selected at random.
You are important for the survey because the random sample is a cross-section of the community. We are interested in people of all circumstances – for example all age groups and all Parishes, whether families or those who live on their own.
Your contribution is vital to the success of the survey. By taking part you will help us provide an accurate picture of how changes in the economy and in government policy affect you and your community.

Household Spending &
Income Survey
And why we need your help.
Who are we?
The independent Statistics Unit produces official statistics for Jersey and is responsible for providing information on the economy, the cost of living in Jersey, and on the population of the Island, through surveys and the census.
What is the Household Spending and Income survey?
The survey provides a detailed look into the way Jersey residents live, in terms of the types of goods and services they buy and how this varies by different household type like size, income, tenure and employment status.
The information collected by the survey has many uses including:
• To ensure the Retail Price s Index (RPI - the official measure of how prices are changing in the Island) remains accurate and relevant to what people in Jersey spend their money on.
• To enable analysis looking at spending habits and income levels of different household types, to better understand income distribution and spending patterns in Jersey, so that government can make informed decisions.
• To estimate total consumer spending ("expenditure") - a major element in measuring the size of the whole Jersey economy.
| An example of information gained from the last survey: The last round of the survey was carried out in 2004/5. It reported that an average Jersey household spent a total of £629 per week. This total represents an increase of around a quarter (26%) on 1999 when the last Household Spending Survey was undertaken. The average weekly spending was also broken down into what the average Jersey household in 2004/5 spent their money on: |
|
| Food & *Miscellaneous Non-alcoholic Goods & drinks Alcohol Restaurants & Services £62 (off-sales) & Hotels £65 tobacco £37 £16 Clothing & Footwear Education £15 £25 Recreation & Housing, Fuel Culture & Power £90 £184 Communication £15 Transport Household £73 Goods and Health Sevices £15 £34 |
|
| * E.g. Personal care, Nurseries and childcare, Insurance etc. |
|
Why take part in the survey?
• To win £500: we will enter your household in a prize draw to win £500.
• For a £10 thank-you: we will give every person that participates £10.
To take a look at your spending: participating in the survey will give you and your household the opportunity to take stock of your spending habits.
• To make sure government statistics represent everyone: your household has been chosen at random. We need households in all situations to take part so that the results represent every type of household in Jersey.
• To help us collect a wide range of important statistics. For example the Retail Price s Index (RPI) is calculated using information on Jersey residents' spending habits. The RPI is often used to increase wages and rents. It is also used when settling maintenance and child support payments and many more.
