Idea Submission - Ian Le Breton, Carmel Farm, Rozel.
- Remove the building around the pool and create an open air leisure lido. This could be heated with geo-thermal pipes under the Glacis Field, supplemented if necessary by solar panels. It could be funded in a variety of ways such as vending machines with swimming paraphernalia, a cafe and non-returnable payment for lockers. If possible the small pool could be joined to the big pool crating a 50 metre pool for competitions/training.
- Do not compromise the fantastic space under the dome. Commission a tourist attracting laser show, Cirque de Soleil, Astro-dome or similar to perform, possibly, twice a week.
- Make significant use of the open air outer ward. In my wild imagination I see it as a supplementary area offered to DURREL with suitable animals roaming and being viewed from above. The sheltered vista at the (I think) north end, would allow the animals distant views over town.
- Raise Pier Road car park to the level of the main entrance. The top floor could then be a large open car park. Make the wall of the car park facing the harbour into a large granite wall which would, from the harbour, look like part of the Fort itself.
- If, and I doubt it, the existing roof were to be replaced it should be with a flat one that can accommodate open air facilities on top of it, creating an absolutely fantastic open air plateau with world class vistas over the town and coast.
