I was on Grouville beach with a friend sunbathing this summer. Six young adults approx. 18- 19 yrs old spent the afternoon close by. They had a great time but when they were leaving they left loads of rubbish behind, bottles, cans, wrappers etc. When I asked them to take it with them they answered 'Someone else will do it'

Most beaches if you take a bag as you walk you can fill it very quickly with rubbish.

Driving around the Island the roads are littered with empty drinks bottles obviously thrown out of cars.

Where I live in St Martins an elderly friend used to take a bag with him every morning on his walk and would put the rubbish he collected in the bins that used to be attached to the lamp- posts along the main road. For some reason these were removed a few years ago and have never been replaced. He now doesn't bother because he doesn't want to take it all home.

Another problem for people who have always picked up litter as they walked their dogs around the lanes is there aren't the spare plastic bags to use to put the rubbish in. No one wants to have to buy bags to pick up other peoples rubbish. So although we are delighted at the removal of too many plastic bags we could do with some that could be re-cycled for just such a purpose.

The sooner the police and honoury police start to fine people for littering the quicker the problem is going to be solved. On the Spot fines would be fantastic if the legislation could be brought in.

Yours sincerely

Mrs K Laverty
