I write in reply to your invitation to comment on the review of speed limits throughout the Island.
I have attended meetings for the public to comment. These were poorly attended and after listening and contributing to the discussion one wonders if any politician will understand the real problem or find the right solution to what I believe to be fairly obvious.
The problem is motorists speeding. In other words going faster than the speed limit indicated for the area.
The real answer must be "Whatever limit is imposed it has to be policed".
This does not happen. Times past on the avenue for example you would see Police in cars and on motorcycles regularly checking and stopping motorists speeding.
When is the last time you saw this happening. I haven't for many years and the public know it.
I don't think there is much wrong generally with the current limits imposed. It just needs controlling.
With regard to the suggestion to increase the green lane limit, I would suggest that we go back to why was the 15 mile limit agreed in the first place. Answer "To give pedestrians and cyclist priority over the car". This can be best achieved surely by not increasing speed limits for motorists using these areas.
I hope you find my comments useful and not feel that I, and many others are not wasting their time.
Summing up " Leave limits as they are, Carry out regular speed checks and start fining the culprits abusing the speed limit"
