Review of Speed Limit Policy

My feelings on the above are as follows:

Basically leave the speed limits as they are.

  • 40 mph should certainly not be reduced where it is now permitted, as only very infrequently is it possible to drive at that speed due to the amount of traffic on the roads.
  • 30 mph is greatly visible on many roads, (though in my opinion, not in all the right places) but with signage in place leave it as it is.
  • 20 mph I feel is often used where it is perfectly possible to drive a little quicker without any problem to road users, but again as the signage is in place – there is no point in changing it.
  • 15 mph is probably right for most of the green lanes as it used mostly on very narrow roads and I believe it reassures pedestrians/cyclists using them.
  • I think a penalty points system will only widen the gap between policing authorities and the general public even more, and people will be inclined to challenge this creating even more unnecessary paperwork which in turn means employing and paying yet more people with money that can be ill afforded in the present climate.
  • The best way to enforce speed limits to improve road safety is to encourage all road users from the youngest children to the most elderly to take responsibility for themselves. In fact the majority of people do this anyway, despite what the authorities believe to be otherwise.
  • This a very small Island – 9 x 5 and it is rapidly turning into a Police/Nanny State. Enough Already.

Now is not the right time to alter things, there is no spare money for any amendments to the above. Please give people the chance to take responsibility.
