Post-16 Education at Beaulieu Review

Beaulieu Convent School's purpose is to deliver a well-balanced, enriching, academically inclusive, education for children between the ages of 3 and 19, within the Roman Catholic Tradition. This involves providing a stimulating learning environment that promotes a focus on learning and knowledge sharing and formation, as well as building the skills, resilience, capabilities, beliefs and values through teaching and learning, debate and research. We are committed to nurturing talents, aspirations and dreams and our students leave us as confident, articulate and compassionate individuals with a hunger for learning and a passion for life.

At Beaulieu, we are very proud of our mixed post-16 provision and provide a tailored and bespoke learning experience for each student, to best meet their requirements. Every student is allocated a Personal Tutor, there to assist with any pastoral or academic concerns or needs. Students meet with their Personal Tutors regularly and receive any support required.

Beaulieu is a fee-paying school (unless our Institute of Technology is accessed, more information below) and the fees are currently £2,059 per term, although we do make provision for bursaries for our students, if required, and subject to financial viability. Beaulieu provides education for girls from the age of 3-19 and we also welcome boys at Sixth Form level.

For those students who have special educational needs, we offer bespoke learning journeys, and those students for whom traditional A Levels are not suitable are able to access functional skills and online courses to ensure they still achieve.

For our more able, or gifted students, we offer the opportunity to take up extra GCSEs and A Levels online, an Extended Project Qualification can be added at Sixth Form to stretch and challenge and we run Uniplus', a lunchtime group open to all students considering highly subscribed universities and courses.

The bespoke Post-16 options we provide follow a number of different pathways, enabling staff and students to select the very best solution for each individual pupil:

Our Post-16 Successes

The post-16 provisions on offer at Beaulieu fall under the following categories: Vocational Training (BTEC and Diplomas)

The BTEC Level 3 National Extended Certificate in Business - This is equivalent to one A Level. It is a practical and relevant course, covering topics such as marketing, human resources, law and finance, with opportunities to meet inspiring entrepreneurs and visit local businesses. We have received support for talks and visits from The Be Served Group, 4Insight, Law at Work, Uberedge Dance, Thompson Estates, Lloyds Bank and Aztec Group.

In addition to business-specific content, this course enables students to develop the transferable and higher-order skills that are highly regarded by both higher education providers and employers. For example, when studying the Personal and Business Finance Unit, students learn to measure the financial performance of a business, preparing and analysing statements of comprehensive income and statements of financial position, as well as analysing profitability, liquidity and business efficiency, which supports some of the skills students need to progress into higher education, employment, self-employment or training.

This course carries UCAS points and is recognised by higher education providers as contributing to meeting admission requirements for many courses, if taken alongside other qualifications as part of a two-year programme of learning, and it combines well with a variety of subjects. Every year, a significant number of BTEC Business students continue their studies in business management or marketing at university, including York, Newcastle, Sussex and Jersey International Business School.

A former Year 13 student commented:

"When I first started Business in Year 12, I didn't really know what to expect as it was a new subject for me, but the lessons have been so lively and engaging that I now feel passionately about the subject and will be studying it at university."

This course also prepares students progressing directly into employment, equipping them with the transferable skills, knowledge and understanding that are an advantage when applying for a range of industry-linked positions. In the past two years, upon successful completion of their qualification, BTEC Business students have joined Elian, Aztec, Royal Bank of Canada and PWC.

The BTEC Level 3 Diploma in Health and Social Care - This is a vocational course for students who are interested in the caring professions as a career. The course includes placements in a number of settings, including hospitals, care homes, community care and schools.

The equivalent of two A Levels, students can choose an additional A Level to study alongside the course. Students study topics such as Human Lifespan Development, Psychology, Principles of Safe Practice and Working in Health and Social Care. They are encouraged to investigate several possible career paths and to stretch themselves, both personally and professionally, in their placements. Work experience contributes towards the understanding of the topics studied in lessons and is highly valued by vocational Degree courses such as Nursing, Midwifery, Psychiatric Nursing, Radiography, Physiotherapy and Social Work. The course was designed, in conjunction with Universities, to include research skills and opportunities to demonstrate qualities such as empathy, time management and the ability to cope in stressful environments.

"You gain valuable experience in communicating and understanding a range of different needs and wants from people you come into contact with. You also develop the ability to recognise and understand the best method of communicating with each different group'. Whether it is young children, their parents, elderly people, their friends and family, colleagues or employers, you will be gaining skills that aren't taught as well without having the opportunity to put them into practice, like this course offers."

Aimee Young, former BTEC Health and Social Care student

"I completed the BTEC Health and Social Care course at Beaulieu and believe that the course has been really beneficial for my career in becoming a teacher. In addition, work experiences gained during the course were amazing and have given me advantages over other students when completing my application for a place at university."

Laura Banks, former BTEC Health and Social Care student

Cambridge Technical Diploma in IT - Cambridge Technicals are vocational qualifications at Level 3 for students aged 16+. They are designed with the workplace in mind and provide a high-quality alternative to A Levels, with a great range of subjects to choose from. Vocational education is not just about results, it's about educating people in the knowledge and skills required for employment, and for the community as a whole. It's also about developing the behaviours and attributes needed to progress and succeed in education and in work.

The Cambridge Technical Diploma in IT has been developed in conjunction with IT employers, Universities and IT experts, to produce a qualification that will equip students with the knowledge and understanding they will require for the ever expanding digital world.

CACHE - Beaulieu currently offers two qualifications focusing on working with children. These qualifications come from CACHE, in partnership with NCFE. Beaulieu offers the qualifications in Early Year Education and Supporting Teaching and Learning, both Level 2 and 3.

CACHE is the leading specialist in Early Years Education, with a heritage in the sector dating back more than 70 years. Students access these qualifications as part of a blended learning programme in Sixth Form, taught alongside a number other Level 3 qualifications. These qualifications also offer placements in surrounding primary and secondary schools. These qualifications have also been offered as evening classes to support current staff and those looking for development from other professions and backgrounds, including those currently working in schools.

Students from Beaulieu select these courses due to a desire to work with children or to access UCAS points for alternative pathways. The assessment for these qualifications extends from professional conversation, observation, essay writing and longitudinal study. There are no examinations.

Beaulieu has run these qualifications for three years and students are also able to gain the following throughout their course:

Early Year Educator - The NCFE CACHE Level 3 Award in Childcare and Education (also known as Early Years Educator) teaches learners crucial knowledge, that is necessary when working with children. The course covers a variety of information on the health and development of a child during the Early Years setting. The course also teaches what is required of an Early Years Educator during this important stage in life. Students do not require a placement or any previous knowledge of working with children to complete this course. The qualification is fully recognised & accepted by Ofsted.

On this course, learners will:

Learn and develop their understanding of development from conception to birth and routine screening programmes in the first year of life.

Understand stages and sequences of development from birth to seven years.

Recognise children's needs in relation to emotional well-being and the physical care needs of children.

Undertake professional development and upon completion of the qualification, should have a much better understanding of a variety of early years practices and procedures to help care for children to the highest possible standard.

Supporting Teaching & Learning - The NCFE CACHE Level 3 Diploma in Supporting Teaching and Learning teaches learners to work in a school setting, collaborating with support teachers and students within their learning environment.

On this course, learners will:

Explore the school as an organisation

Study literacy development

Study numeracy development

Explore special educational needs

Understand the challenges of English as a second language

Other Qualifications Taught Alongside CACHE - To increase employability in a competitive market, Beaulieu also provides learners with the opportunity to complete the following qualifications:

Safeguarding Level 2

BSL Level 2

Speech, Language and Communicate Skills Level 1

Pediatric First Aid

Food & Hygiene Level 2

NASEN SEN(D) Foundation

LAMDA Performance Examinations - Drama and Theatre students are also able to take the LAMDA performance examinations Grades 6-8, which receive UCAS points, supporting access to University. There is no written paper required for this qualification.

Level 3 Diploma in Food Science and Nutrition - In this course we provide students with practical life skills and an understanding of how to meet the specific nutritional needs for a range of different individuals, as well as an understanding of food science and food safety. The theory covered is taught in a mostly practical context, allowing students to demonstrate their knowledge using real-life situations. Students can achieve a certificate level qualification if they choose to leave after the first year of study, but most continue on to complete the two year course and gain the diploma qualification.

Whilst a relatively new course (launched in 2015), one of our students has gone on to study a BA in Culinary Arts Management, and the other students have developed important practical life-skills that will help them in not only their future careers but also in their day-to-day lives as well.

"The Level 3 course has certainly put me in a good place, as in my first lecture we were asked if anyone knew what HACCP stood for and I answered... and it was correct - they were surprised that someone knew the answer! Also my first assignment is to produce an infographic on a harmful bacteria which will be a breeze, as that was what one of our coursework pieces was on."

Past pupil, currently at University College Birmingham, College of Food, studying Culinary Arts Management.

Extended Project Qualification (EPQ) - An Extended Project Qualification is a qualification that is equivalent to half an A Level. Today, the EPQ is taken by many students, mostly those who take A Levels. The extended project was devised in 2006 and the students' choice of topic is free, although they must show that it is academically useful and either related to their current course of study, or their future career.

The EPQ will take one year to complete and within that year students will have weekly taught lessons, as well as individual meetings with their Supervisors, who will support them through the process. The final product takes the form of either a dissertation (5,000 words being a common guideline), or a number of other types of extended pieces of work: such as a musical or dramatical composition, a report or artefact, all backed up with paperwork. As well as creating the dissertation or equivalent, the EPQ process also includes: researching and referencing, creating arguments, writing their dissertation or final piece, creating and delivering a presentation, as well as reflecting on what they have learnt. To date our students have found the EPQ course very rewarding and it can assist students in securing a lower grade offer from universities, if they achieve successfully within their EPQ.

"Many higher education institutions, including the University of Bath, regard this qualification as excellent preparation for higher education study. Having an EPQ will show Universities that you have the independent writing and study skills needed to study their courses" University of Bath

Beaulieu Institute of Technology - Our newly launched Beaulieu Institute of Technology, like our Sixth Form, is co-educational, and provides students with low or modest means the opportunity to join the Beaulieu family free of charge to undertake a unique and bespoke course which combines A Level equivalent BTEC courses in Business and IT, with an Extended Project Qualification and tailored work experience throughout the course. Our aim is to create more digitally native, business astute learners, ready to fit into our local workforce and have a positive impact. BIT should allow entry to work and University College, Jersey.

"The course is an excellent choice for a student who is not quite sure on what they want to do for a career yet. I personally believe this course will open more doors than any other 16 - 18 educational path, as long as you are willing to give it your all. It will connect you with all sorts of people, which is key.

I honestly never thought I would have enjoyed school this much ever in my life. Every day is something new. All is relevant to the world and is extremely interesting.

The teachers who are part of this course are not like teachers, they treat you like an adult and make you feel part of a community. They are happy to help whenever. They really do want the best for you."

Kai Rawley, current BIT student

Careers, Opportunities, Guidance and Skills (COGS)

At Beaulieu we take a holistic approach to supporting our Sixth Form students to prepare for life Post-18. Each student has a careers lesson once a week as part of the COGs programme.

In Year 12 we focus on career exploration and researching Post-18 options, including Higher Education on-Island, off-Island and further afield, as well as employment and Gap Year opportunities. Students will receive general information regarding Higher Education and how to make their choices, as well as life at University and moving away from home. Topics include Labour Market information, school leaver employment options and gap year opportunities.

We invite past pupils in to talk about their experiences, as well as University Admission Tutors from Universities, including Brighton and Winchester, to provide valuable advice on applying to University and completing Personal Statements.

In March of Year 12, students will visit the Higher Education Fair, where they will have the opportunity to speak to representatives from a large variety of Universities and Colleges. By November of Year 13, students who are applying for Higher Education opportunities will be required to submit their UCAS forms.

Once applications are submitted, students will then receive post application support including interview preparation, student finance procedures, student travel, accommodation and student budgeting. The University of East Anglia Pre-University Skills course for University applicants is also available.

Throughout both Years 12 and 13, we also assist students in preparing for employment, whether that is part-time or full-time, by ensuring CVs are prepared, cover letters produced and interview techniques practised. We provide real-life mock interviews by bringing managers in from industry, and students will have a ten minute interview and receive feedback following this. The ASDAN Employability Skills Development Certificate is also available for employment pathway students to access. This is run in conjunction with First Names, who provide nine sessions to help cover topics within this certificate.

Students will be given advice on how to keep a professional profile / image on social media and will be guided through Gap Year volunteering and work experience opportunities both locally and abroad.

We like to invite in as many guest speakers as possible from industry, visiting Universities, charity / volunteering associations, as well as local recruitment agencies, to provide as much information and guidance to students as possible, so that by the time they leave Sixth Form, they are prepared and equipped to make informed choices about their futures. Individual guidance is also provided, as and when students require this.

Work Experience

We strive to provide our Sixth Formers with work experience relevant to their career aspirations wherever possible and we regularly have Sixth Form students working in Finance, Law, Marketing and Accountancy during their school holidays. Our relationships with local businesses are very strong and our students remain extremely sought after by employers locally.

We organise individualised placements for Year 12 students during Activities Week in July and for Year 13 students during enrichment time or in free periods. For the year 2017-2018, 25 placements were sourced.

"Last year we had two Beaulieu students join us for work placements:

Abbie Roberts joined our Funds team, originally on a one day work placement, where she showed great enthusiasm, is very methodical and has been a real asset to the team. Abbie enrolled with JIBS and we jumped at the chance of offering her a two day work placement to support her studies and also a number of weeks work experience over the summer. It has been great watching Abbie grow in confidence and the team really do appreciate her contribution, she is hard-working and will push herself outside of her comfort zone to grab the opportunity to learn and develop her skills.

Another student joined HR one day a week for approximately 7-8 weeks. She had a really positive attitude, full of energy and enthusiasm, and was always eager to learn. During her time with us she completed a project which was very comprehensive and to the brief and will be a real asset to any company she joins.

Due to the success we've had with these students, and the support from Hannah Samson, we are looking forward to welcoming Rebecca Gomes after October half term, for a one day placement, and our first impressions have been very positive."

Abbie Cardy, Direct Sourcing Manager, First Names Group

Progression Qualifications

Functional Skills - Functional Skills are qualifications in English and Mathematics that equip learners with the practical skills needed to live, learn and work successfully and the ability to apply these skills effectively to a range of purposes in the workplace and in other real life situations.

Beaulieu prides itself on being an academically inclusive school, providing Functional Skills as a pathway, offering students the ability to:

be assessed within four windows per year, with unlimited resit opportunities

sit an assessment, comprising a single 1 hour 30 minute exam

work with tutors on the pre-release materials, to address any literacy / numeracy issues, ensuring that they can access the context and helping them to think functionally before the exam

earn additional points on the Achievement and Attainment table (Level 2 = 23, Level 1 = 12.5, Entry 3 = 7, Entry 2 = 6, Entry 1 = 5)

acquire and develop mathematical / literacy thinking and transferable skills over rote learning, and encourages a teaching approach that is enriching and engaging for all students.

For students this means:

interesting and highly relevant content

developing and refining their problem solving strategies and building the confidence and skills required to tackle unfamiliar challenges

gaining literacy and mathematical skills most useful in everyday contexts and the world of work, and practical skills they can use in further education, work and everyday life

gaining an additional, valuable qualification in little extra time

Elements of the course are included in GCSE English and Mathematics specifications

There are good opportunities for progression to GCSE Mathematics and English.

Duke of Edinburgh - Beaulieu is an accredited Duke of Edinburgh Centre and we are currently offering Bronze, Silver and Gold qualifications, using a range of modes of travel, including walking and cycling. Our expeditions are challenging and normally take place in Scotland or France.

The Duke of Edinburgh's Award is for all young people, regardless of their background or circumstances...we hear about the number of young people out of work, education or training on a daily basis and I believe the DofE has never been more relevant. We know that people look for the DofE on young people's CVs, it could help them get that essential first job." HRH, The Countess of Wessex, December 2011

There are a number of reasons to undertake Duke of Edinburgh Awards:

Achieving an Award provides the skills, confidence and a view on life that everyone is looking for, from employers to colleges and universities.

Students get recognised for doing things they want to do (and may even be doing already).

It makes a difference to other people's lives and the wider community and involves students becoming fitter and healthier, making new friends and lifelong memories.

It's great fun!

Beyond academic achievements, universities want to see evidence of so called soft skills' that are have developed through extra-curricular activities, such as communication, commitment, leadership and teamwork. A DofE Award is a fantastic way to demonstrate and evidence these skills in practice.

Sixth Form Enrichment

The Sixth Form Enrichment programme provides Sixth Formers with the opportunities to develop skills and knowledge for adult life. It helps students to leave the School with skills that set them apart and give them confidence to progress in a world beyond Beaulieu. Participation is compulsory and will form part of their reference when an activity is completed. There is no impact on academic time.

Each term a different range of physical, cultural, creative, mental and emotional development activities will be offered, giving students the opportunity to select two activities each year. During the summer term students can benefit from relaxation sessions and revision support. This year we are offering – Yoga and Mindfulness, Kickboxing, Classic Film, PeaceJam (a social action and positive change group), Makaton, visits to two care homes, including advanced dementia patients (training is provided), Creative and Crafty – upcycling for charity, Public Speaking and Jerriais. We welcome experts from outside the educational environment and encourage suggestions for new experiences from parents, students, employers and further education.

We have also offered:

Art Appreciation, E-Magazine project, Fort Regent Gym, Self Defense, Latin, Mandarin, University Survival Skills, Mindfulness Training, Indoor Climbing, Pilates, Gym, Summer Team Games, Cheap Healthy Cooking, Basic Car Maintenance, Personal Finance, Finance Qualifications, Classic Book Club, Citizenship, Critical Thinking and Philosophy, Orienteering, Creative with Nature, Charity Fundraising, Debating Skills, 21st Century Etiquette.

Alongside the enrichment activities, we actively encourage our Sixth Formers to participate in a wide range of activities to enhance their communication, team working, problem solving and critical thinking skills. These include:

Leadership Opportunities - Our Sixth Formers take on a number of leadership opportunities which they complete very seriously and each year they work tirelessly as a team to ensure the smooth running of many additional opportunities for students across the School.

The roles they undertake include:

Head Girl

Deputy Head

Senior Prefect

Prefect

Student Council Representative

Mentor Representative

Year 7 Buddy

Peer Support

Environmental Prefect.

House Responsibilities - Within School, we have a dedicated team of Year 12s leading the House system, ably supported by their Year 11 deputies. Our students take their House allegiance very seriously, and a number of House events are organised throughout the year, including Drama, Dance, Music, Times-tables, Academic Quiz and Fundraising Competitions. These events tend to be a resounding success, with a large number of students from all year groups taking part, enhancing their confidence and their team building skills.

Fundraising and World Awareness - Each December we send a group of Sixth Formers to Romania to support in the distribution of Shoe Boxes for the Mustard Seed' Charity. In April, Sixth Formers organise the Slum Survivor Challenge. Students build shelters from recycled cardboard and tarpaulin and then spend the night under the stars in a bid to raise awareness of the poverty that others live in, and to raise funds for the Jersey Shelter Trust. There is an annual PeaceJam trip to the UK, where students are able to participate in an inspiring, exciting and diverse weekend of events, all built around incorporating peace and justice into our education, communities and lives.

Young Enterprise Company Programme - Our Sixth Formers have the opportunity of learning to run a business through the Young Enterprise Company programme. Supported by local business professionals, the scheme takes students through the steps required to launch a new business and make it a financial success.

We strongly believe that developing, and having evidence of such skills, enhances opportunities when looking for employment or applying for a University place.

Outdoor and Adventurous Education - We are passionate about offering our students access to activities that take them outside their comfort and stretch them physically and emotionally.

Recent activities and courses on offer have included the National Indoor Climbing Award Scheme, leading to the Climbing Wall Assistant qualifications for mountain training; the National Navigation Award Scheme; paddleboarding, archery and Scuba diving PADI courses.

Stretch and Challenge Opportunities

We offer a number of opportunities to stretch and challenge our most able students:

Pre-University courses - Beaulieu offers the Cambridge Pre-U school leaving qualification from Cambridge Assessment International Education. It is an alternative to the current A Level qualification. It is principally aimed at students aged 16–19, and has recognition for university entrance.

The Cambridge Pre-U was launched in 2008 by Cambridge International Examinations in order to create a qualification that would offer additional depth in subjects beyond the standard A Level syllabus.

The Cambridge Pre-U is linear, like the UK A Level, and does not have any compulsory principal subjects, as the International Baccalaureate does - students have a free choice of three such Principal Subjects' out of 27. Additional subjects may be taken, though not incorporated into the Diploma. There are also 'short courses', consisting of one year's study, available in Modern Foreign Languages, Maths and Further Maths. Students who complete an Independent Research Project' and a Global Perspectives' portfolio, in addition to the three Principal Subjects', are eligible for the Cambridge Pre-U Diploma Award.

PeaceJam - Our students are regularly involved in PeaceJam. The PeaceJam Foundation is an international organisation whose mission statement is "to create young leaders committed to positive change in themselves, their communities, and the world through the inspiration of Nobel Peace Laureates who pass on the spirit, skills, and wisdom they embody." Our students take part in PeaceJam Slam, which takes place at the University of Winchester.

At the most recent event, students had the opportunity to take part in workshops, for instance one led by Sandra Lewis from the African women / girls' charity, 'Phoebe's Family', learning more about the challenges of poverty, sexual abuse and health care in the west of Kenya. They took two suitcases full of donations for this project, full of sanitary pads (nearly 1,000), clean / new underwear (over 200 pairs) and some basic educational and medical equipment, which would be taken directly to the orphanage and schools with which this

project works. Most of the children supported by the charity have lost parents and immediate family as a result of HIV / AIDS, typhoid, tuberculosis and malaria. The charity aims to educate and empower the youth to be strong, independent and healthy young people.

Beaulieu students joined other local students, as well as students from across England and Wales, and participated in a full day of activities, which included speeches from Nobel Peace Prize Laureate, Tawakkol Karman of the Arab Spring in Yemen, a panel of Middle Eastern researchers and policy experts identifying the issues and concerns of the region, interactive workshops and project presentations ranging from Shelterbox to Syrian refugees, African childbirth mortality rates, tools for self-reliance and healthy relationships.

Our students presented two of our recent projects at the conference, both of which were very positively received. In addition, students had the chance to experience being on a University campus and interacting with a wide range of students, many from diverse backgrounds that are not common to Jersey. Based on projects that collaborate with PeaceJam UK and would be represented at the conference, the students aimed to commit to both an internal (at Beaulieu) and external (African) project and both were presented as part of the One Billion Acts of Peace' at the two-day conference. As pupils at an independent, predominantly girls' school, the students felt it was important to focus their initiatives on supporting and empowering other girls and young women. This led to collaboration with Phoebe's Family.'

Over the past eight months the students have also devised an on-site project, developed to foster awareness and understanding of positive role models in the Primary School, with Years 3–6. The focus of this year's program was Desmond Tutu, 1984 Nobel Peace Prize winner, with activities based around South African culture and Desmond Tutu's experience and advice. For this reason, the outreach projects have also focused on African projects and issues. Sixth Form students who chose this enrichment project have designed and taught short activity-based lessons to Years 3–6 on Friday afternoons, which have included African dance, African song, letters to Desmond Tutu and quizzes around his life and the impact he has had.

Workshops - Year 12 and 13 students start the year with two, two hour workshops from Positively MAD, a company who are one of the country's leading providers of student workshops' providing sessions called Bridging the Gap'.

STEM opportunities - we provide many STEM (science, technology, engineering and maths) based opportunities for gifted and talented students. Students are encouraged to enter the Peterhouse Cambridge Essay Competition; the Biology Olympiad and Intermediate Olympiad competitions, run by the Royal Society of Biology, where students have achieved bronze and silver medals and the Nancy Rothwell Competition, again run by the Royal Society of Biology.

In addition, students have the opportunity to join our weekly STEM club and take additional STEM qualifications and Core Maths qualifications and can also benefit from regular STEM

visits including:

Biology in Action Lectures in London; the Wider Earth play at the Natural History Museum; Taxidermy at St Mary's; Genetics at Wakehurst, Sanger Institute; Laboratory experience at L'Oreal YSC; the Science Museum and the Wellcome Collection visit.

We also facilitate students taking part in ZSL's short term STEM project and the Royal Society's long term STEM project.

Uniplus - Uniplus is a lunchtime group open to all students considering Oxford, Cambridge, Veterinary, Dentistry, Medicine or other highly subscribed universities and courses. Students meet fortnightly to discuss wider reading tasks, current affairs and complete the higher order thinking tasks required at interview for these courses. Students will also receive additional support with Multiple Mini Interviews (MMIs). Staff who have personal experience with the application process for these universities and courses will share their advice, along with invited professionals from relevant fields.

Beaulieu Institute of Theological Literacy Enrichment for Years 12 and 13 - In partnership with Maryvale College of Further and Higher Education (a specialist Philosophy, Ethics and Theology college that is part of the Archdiocese of Birmingham), the Beaulieu Institute for Theological Literacy (BITL), is working to facilitate opportunities for students in Years 12 and 13 to engage critically with some of life's deeper issues. Maryvale is a college of international reputation because of its specialisation in distance learning and its desire to promote an attitude of learning and research for life'. Once students enrol with Maryvale, they are students for life.

BITL aims to offer an opt-in platform of General Philosophy / Ethics / Religious Studies for VIth Form, with course titles such as:

  • Introduction to Philosophy
  • Catholic Social Teaching
  • Introduction to the Documents of Pope Francis
  • Introduction to Church History
  • Introduction to the Idea of Teaching as Vocation
  • Introduction to the Second Vatican Council (Vatican II)
  • Life: Meaningful or Meaningless?

Apart from the skill set and range of personal qualities afforded by such courses, they are also a potentially very rich bank of research resources for students doing the EPQ.

Extended Project Qualification (EPQ) - EPQ is optional as an additional qualification to stretch and challenge (detailed previously).

SEND and Additional Qualifications

Students for whom the traditional' A Level pathway is not suitable are offered alternative ways to access relevant and valuable courses. Beaulieu has enrolled students via the Online Study College, allowing students to access courses which would otherwise be impossible to run due to staffing implications. The online delivery allows one student to be entered onto a course in a practical and cost effective manner, whilst meeting their needs and aspirations.

The students receive access to a wide range of online learning resources such as written material, presentations and video tutorials from the Online Study College. They are also given a dedicated online tutor with whom they can communicate via email. In addition to this, the students also receive dedicated time on their timetable with a tutor available in school to support them, as required. These courses allow students to be flexible with their working, as well as allowing access to a broader range of subjects and qualifications.

The flexible nature of the courses ensure that students who require additional support or time are able to work at a pace that suits them and allows them to reach their potential.

Alongside the course studied via the Online Study College, we also offer qualifications which make students more employable. These have included qualifications in Food Hygiene, leading onto a successful career in the food service industry, as well as qualifications in safeguarding, for those students whose career aspirations lie in working with children or young people. These courses equip students with a better understanding of a chosen career before entering into employment or further training and development. Some of these qualifications are encompassed within the CACHE course, but are also able to be taken as discrete qualifications in their own right.

Within the range of pathways offered, students are able to complete Entry Level, Functional Skills, GCSE, A Level as well as Vocational Awards, to allow them to study at a suitable level whilst engaging them and preparing them for future employment and education.

Next year we will be trialing and developing the option of a fully online Jersey qualification from CISI (Chartered Institute for Securities & Investment). This course (Fundamentals of Financial Services) is an optional Level 2 professional qualification we hope will help students gain an advantage in Jersey's Financial sector.

Community Opportunities

At Beaulieu we offer a range of courses that benefit students beyond the traditional pathways, into adult education.

Beaulieu Institute of Technology (BIT) Adult Courses - Through our Beaulieu Institute of Technology, we provide structured free IT related support sessions to local community groups, charities and small businesses. These have included GDPR and the new legal changes to Data Protection coming into force this year, as well as Cryptocurrencies.

BIT also offers unique one-off talks on general digital topics throughout the year that can be found on Eventbrite periodically. These courses are open to the general public.

Beaulieu Institute of Theological Literacy (BITL) - The Beaulieu Institute for Theological Literacy - BITL - is a centre for resourcing and exploration, rooted in the principles of Catholic education and formation, operating out of Beaulieu School.

Through our Beaulieu Institute of Theological Literacy we offer a subsidised Catholic Certificate in Religious Studies, a nationally accredited course available to any individual who is interested in Catholic Theology and its application in Religious Education in school and parish.

"The lecturers are so engaging, challenging and certainly make me think, leading me to want to know more. Fr. Paul is a talented lecturer, I love his use of humour and often laugh at the way he says things!"

Measuring Our Success

At Beaulieu we spend time measuring the outcomes from the many provisions and initiatives we implement. Examination results (detailed earlier) show the academic success we regularly enjoy with our students and our value added scores are often in the region of 30% (compared to 20% in other Catholic schools and 10% in most schools).

The ability of our students to move on and progress, enjoying success at university, on gap years or at work, has demonstrated the success of the very tailored and bespoke provisions we have in place for our students.

Student feedback and evaluation is also key and our alumni association, the Beaulieu Foundation, enables our past pupils to stay in touch with the School and each other, keeping us updated on their progression and development and feeding back on how well they feel prepared for life beyond Beaulieu. We also organised regular past pupil events, which allow members to gather together, catch up and and reminisce.

The fact that we have so many past pupils currently working at Beaulieu as teachers, as teaching assistants, in marketing, as Assistant Heads and even as Head of School is testament to the family community we create and the nurturing environment our students enjoy.

Challenges Faced For Post-16 Provision

Like any post-16 provider, Beaulieu faces a number of challenges, but is well equipped to deal with them head on and ensure our students continue to achieve above and beyond what is expected of them. These challenges include:

Changing subject specifications

Increased rigour

Reduction in coursework

Move to linear examination and away from modules

Additional space and resources required for a growing Sixth Form provision

University fee increases

Accessibility and number of degree pathways in Jersey

Next Steps

Beaulieu has already worked hard over recent years to ensure that the post-16 opportunities available to our students are as wide as possible, catering for both the most able students and those who may have specific learning requirements.

We are always striving to enhance our provision, however, and there are number of initiatives we will be focusing on in the future that will aim to enhance academic results, opportunities and life skills.

Enrichment Programmes - We will be seeking to introduce further enrichment programmes that include additional qualifications to provide additional formalised skills, like BSL, Lifeguarding, First Aid at work, LAMDA etc, as well as enrichment opportunities that focus on well-being and mindfulness.

Enhanced Facilities - as part of an investment agreement with the States of Jersey, we have developed plans for a brand new Sixth Form Centre, which will include enhanced study space and extensive common room facilities, as well as an extended Cafe Beau for healthy breakfast, break and lunch options. We also have plans for a new Sports Centre, to include a sports hall, dance studio, changing rooms and offices, all available for enhanced Sixth Form enrichment opportunities. We are currently seeking planning permission and envisage both developments being completed in the next 2-3 years.

Enhanced Guidance - we are reviewing our guidance policy, in line with successful policies in place in the UK, and plan for a modified and enhanced careers provision, with more personalised support to ensure that the guidance needs of every Beaulieu student are met.

Skills Development Log - we are devising an enhanced system where students are able to log, record and reflect on the skills developed via activities undertaken through School opportunities. This includes the development of a Record of Achievement, Careers Management Database and Skills Passport.

Widening Access to Beaulieu - The Beaulieu Board of Trustees has established an enhanced bursary provision, available from September 2019, providing greater access for the wider community. Currently access is restricted to bursary support only for existing students who have been part of the School family for a minimum of two years. From September 2019, Beaulieu is committed to broadening access to the School by offering, to eligible parents and guardians, means tested financial support with the payment of school fees to all parents, irrespective of their child's time with us.
