- Students attend the Jersey Skills Show in order to discuss with industry professionals and try to enhance their understanding of the career options available to them in Jersey.
Year 10 & 11
- Every student in Yr10 has a one-to-one bespoke careers interview with a Level 7 Trained Careers adviser from Skills Jersey. They will discuss their individual futures and the next steps on their careers journey.
- The Trident process starts straight away in KS4 and we deliver a weekly Keynote presentation on this activity. Targeted focus on selection and application for Trident takes place within the first half term. Students receive two computer session a week in addition to this and work closely with their form tutors in order to successfully apply for Work Experience.
- Students also undertake via KUDOS program a series of sessions in order to create an individualised career profile, and also create a CV.
- Students attend the Jersey Skills Show in order to discuss career options with industry professionals and enhance their understanding of the career options available to them in Jersey.
- Visiting employers / organisations undertake various presentations to KS4 to give students an insight into life working in their specific field. Examples from last academic year include Geotechnical (Geomarine), Royal Navy etc.
- Information with regards employment / Post 16 opportunities are presented to students on a weekly basis. This commences in the Autumn term of Year 11. Our Head of Careers attends regular Heads of Careers meetings where Post 16 opportunities are discussed and shared, and these are then cascaded to our KS4 students.
- We hold a post 16 options evening (September) and invite all the Post 16 providers to attend and present their opportunities for Post 16 to our Year 11.
- We invite Post 16 providers in to assemblies with and separate hour-long sessions as appropriate to present to students, so they are fully aware of the options available to them for Post 16 Education.
- Applications to 16+ providers in Jersey, Highlands, Hautlieu, JCG, etc. are supported through keynote assemblies and tutors on a weekly basis.
- JGC and Victoria College are presenting to our students in October to explain the bursary opportunities which are available this year.
Successes
- We have had a student recently achieve a scholarship to Gordonstoun School for 6th Form and is currently on their role.
- Our students are focused and take their Post 16 options seriously. Students must leave Haute Vallee at the end of KS4 so they have a level of urgency and are aware of the requirement to focus in order to make the right decision on their futures.
- Some students who may have preconceptions with regards some other Post16 providers have these largely removed by inviting the private schools amongst others into school to speak to students with a view to considering a future with them.
- Skills Jersey as a whole and the network of Careers leads in Jersey is excellent for sharing practice and knowledge endemic throughout all secondary schools / colleges whether they be private or state.
- Every student in Yr11 has had a one-to-one bespoke careers interview with a Level 7 Trained Careers adviser from Skills Jersey. This is invaluable in giving the necessary guidance which students need to plan the start of their career journey.
Challenges
- Businesses often express a concern that schools do not provide the necessary skills for their industries. We need to work more closely with industry to get a better understanding of the skills required but also consider the requirement for student to undertake syllabuses set by UK GCSE exam boards.
Future Initiatives
- Develop a Specific Website devoted to Haute Vallee Careers education- where we can share the latest information / advice / news etc.
- We are planning to bring in Barclays Life Skills to our current Yr10 to enhance vital areas of Careers education E.g. interview technique to name one.
