We have no comment on the Terms of Reference, other than to point out that No 7 should probably be No 1 in terms of priorities, as there must be much to learn from other islands in the world. We know that huge amounts are being invested worldwide in trying to find solutions to the plastics problem, and we should not be insular in our approach.

With regard to our feedback, we feel there is no encouragement for households to reduce plastic use, coupled with confusion over what plastic can be recycled in Jersey, and how. A few conversations with friends have highlighted the fact that everyone wants to help but no-one knows what the rules are. As an example, we read an interesting and informative article in a recent Which magazine, which said that plastic caps should be kept on bottles sent for recycling, and explained why. We were under the impression they shouldn't be - mixed messages, and asking at the recycling centre didn't help. We would also like clarification on which plastic bottles can be recycled - only drinks bottles or any bottle that contained a liquid?

Only a couple of parishes have household collection of plastic. We do not understand why different parishes have different approaches to this. There should be an island-wide strategy, taking into consideration the fact that the elderly, unwell and non-drivers are not able to take their plastic to a central collection point.

Our job, as consumers, is to collect plastics for recycling. Government's job is to provide facilities for collection, look at ways of recycling, and put pressure on supermarkets and other retailers who should be finding alternative materials and environmentally safe packaging.

We understand that some companies recycle plastic from customers but are not sure if this extends to any companies in Jersey eg in the UK B&Q take back plastic plant pots for re-using. It would be good to have a Jersey directory of such businesses.

We hope these comments help with your work.
