Submission 14 - John Shield Dear Review Committee
I believe there are many problems facing retailers, most having been expressed in the JEP tonight (7/9/18)
What must be emphasised are:
- The huge range of goods available on line which no local retailer could hope to match;
- The ease of buying online – just sitting at home – and the very quick delivery times;
- The often significant extra costs charged in Jersey – I have recently returned from a visit to England with a list and prices of selected goods which I am now comparing to Waitrose, the Co-op and Iceland in Jersey and so far there have mainly been noticeable increases in the Jersey prices.
I find it incredible local retailers have to compete with others who do not pay tax – what hope have they got, really?
Sadly, it may be we have to accept that retailing is changing and there will be more and more use of online buying.
Regards John Shield
