Corporate Services Scrutiny Panel Budget 2019 Review – Submissions
Theresa Hughes
Dear Kristina,
I have tried to make sense of the Budget regarding our Non resident pensioners tax situation, it is not straightforward.
My understanding is we will get Tax relief in 2020. We will have to pay the full 6000 pounds for 2018, this means we will have paid 12,000 extra tax just because we left Jersey. This amount of money has almost wiped out our savings. We thoroughly researched how leaving Jersey would impact on our finances, the Budget in 2016 through a spanner in the works. Plus the post Brexit foreign exchange rate has gone against us.
Our tax bill as Jersey residents was around 2000 pounds, when the MR was removed the tax liability increased by 4000 per year.
I am so utterly disappointed (understatement) how can it be fair to punish us for leaving? We are not entitled to a vote or health care, we do not utilise any of the services for which tax is collected.
The SOJ have agreed to pay University fees for couples on a joint income of 150,000, when our son went to Uni we were not entitled to a grant.
I firmly believe our human rights have been violated, (The Universal Declaration of Human Rights article 2) We are being discriminated against by virtue of where we choose to live. The SOJ claim this is HR compliant, it is not. They quoted a case to me which was flawed, I will send you this by separate email.
kind regards, Teresa
