I have long been an advocate of a firm policy on immigration and have written on various forums including the JEP many, many times.
Whilst the government of the Island continues to maintain an open door policy then standards of living will go from bad to worse.
The Island cannot accommodate more and more people in the hope that it will create more tax revenues. This is a fallacy and the government knows but will not admit to it. Yes of course we need professionals who will help generate revenue but the mere fact that we have to keep bringing in consultants to consult must surely mean that we are not inviting in those that are useful to the Island but to a particular sector. This is blind thinking.
And of course the problem is that when we do allow professionals here to work and live they necessarily want to bring their families.
All this adds to the burdens on housing and causes chaos with our infrastructure.
In the meantime Jersey people are leaving the Island because it is becoming so uncomfortable.
Successive governments have swerved the problem of immigration despite resolutely stating in their manifestos that they consider a proper, robust immigration policy to be needed. But because they have no accountability they get away with this time after time.
Now enough is enough!
Of course we now need to spend hundreds of millions on a new hospital because the old one can't cope with the increasing population with more and more medical needs.
Current politicians should hang their heads in shame. They are blinded by the money generated by the finance industry and have sold the Island down the river.
And by the way, if the finance industry is so good and so plentiful why are we in the financial mess we are in?
