Written Submission from member of public re Future Hospital Site 3rd October 2020

Details:

I was heartened to read in the JEP that your panel are to look closer and the decision process of sites for the new hospital.

I think most of St Helier residents are resigned to the loss of the Peoples Park although we commend our constable for his efforts to protect it. Having followed the debate carefully it would seem that this site has always been a preferred site and the fact that they had looked at almost a hundred sites was a way of confirming that a detailed search had been carried out.

Walking down Westmount you can compare the size of The Peoples Park to the footprint of the current hospital where it is evident that the area is not big enough. It is possible that once the new Care Plan is introduced and more care is placed into the community that a much smaller hospital will be needed – cue Peoples park!

Overdale is interesting for a number of reasons. In the reign of Senator Syvret about 40 care beds were purchased at Silver Springs, a new privately run care home that had just come online. The excuse was that some of the buildings at Overdale were in a poor state of repair although I believe they are still standing now. The suggestion that a new road will necessary is also interesting when you compare many of the narrow roads and bends in the island. New ambulance staff take driver training both here and on the mainland so I would be sad to think that my former colleagues are unable to cope with Westmount.

And finally, Warwick Farm and St Saviours Hospital dismissed as to far out of town, call over to Guernsey and you will have to take a taxi to visit patients in their hospital.
