Dear Review Panel,
I have been a full time fisherman for many years . I have been selling my catch to same French merchant for over ten years. Since March he has not been able to get over to Jersey to buy fish due to corona virus restrictions. Fortunately other fishermen with bigger boats could occasionally take my catch to France to land when they were going over.
Since Brexit this is no longer allowed , and with no ferry service to St Malo for months, and French authorities stopping Jersey boats from landing, the future doesn't look good.
Even when these issues are resolved we still have the problem of large French boats been allowed to fish up to three miles from our coast , Jersey will never have a sustainable fishery while this is allowed to continue. It seems unfair that the French are given a permit to fish our waters, and local fishermen have to pay thousands of pounds for a fishing license! Also whilst all the other crown dependencies got their territorial waters extended to six miles , Jersey's stayed at three miles. I feel we have missed a once in a life time opportunity to take back control of more of our waters , preserve more of our fish stocks, and provide a sustainable fishery for future generations.
The External Relations minister has let us down. He didn't want to meet with the fishing industry to hear our concerns while he was negotiating this deal, I feel he was more concerned with keeping the French happy rather than looking after jersey's best interests.
Kind regards Steph Noel.
