Dear Scrutiny Panel
I wish to provide some comments on going cashless, particularly since I had the misfortune of having my phone stolen whilst on holiday, had no access to emails as my two factor authentication didn't work as I did not have an ipad with me and the computer I tried to use did not recognise me.
I was therefore stuck and had to rely on my family giving me cash to purchase items and I then reimbursed them when back in Jersey.
Also, to add to my woes, I was penalised when trying to use the bus as Liberty bus charges a premium when paying cash!
Going cashless works well, but it is a real headache, extremely stressful and frustrating when you are totally reliant on technology to do the simple things in life, like purchase food or use public transport.
Another issue will be when there is a power failure, with everything going electrical. How would you purchase your groceries if banking / no power for a day or weeks if the Island is hit by a Tsunami etc?
I strongly advocate giving people the option to use their own preferred method of payment.
What do women who are in abusive relationships do, if they are trying to save cash to eventually leave their abusive man who is constantly checking and controlling her spending habits?
What about the little old man / lady / disabled person who relies on the use of cash as its easier than using a card?
Society is so focused on anti terrorism with little thought for a larger group of people who are just trying to survive everyday without constantly being scrutinised or having the stress of paying by phone or card.
I don't believe in having my eggs all in one basket, and by forcing society to go cashless, you are doing just that.
