Good morning
We operate four cafés in St Helier and would comment as follows:
- about a year ago we moved to ' no cash'
- the majority of our customers are people working in the finance sector (our
opening hours are 07.30 - 15.30 Monday - Friday) and they have no apparent issues with paying digitally/by card - the preferred method of payment is to 'tap'
- not accepting cash payments is the preferred option from an environmental health point-of-view
- as the nature of our business is to make sandwiches from scratch, we use both hands and it is not appropriate to change gloves or wash hands to make a cash transaction
- we have had very few incidents where people have left the cafés due to being unable to pay by cash (we do take cash if no other option is available but this is usually less than £20 per week over the 4 cafés)
- for the island to go cash-free would be completely unacceptable because of the small number of people in our community who do not have bank accounts / prefer to budget using cash
- it is our preference to go cash-free as a business for hygiene reasons
