States Assembly

13 November 2024

States Member, Deputy Raluca Kovacs has been honoured by the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (the CPA) as New Parliamentarian of the Year 2024.

Deputy Kovacs was given the award in recognition for her contribution to promoting parliamentary democracy, with the CPA praising her efforts to:
  • advocate for gender equality;
  • promoting the findings of the Review on Violence Against Women and Girls;
  • work with community groups to promote youth engagement in politics;
  • increasing financial support for parents with babies in neonatal care; and
  • developing a support scheme for free wound dressings and medical hosiery.
The CPA gives awards to parliamentarians in Commonwealth legislatures across several categories, including life-time achievement and equality and diversity. Nominees for the New Parliamentarian Award must be in their first term and have demonstrated an impressive record of achievement in their first years as a parliamentarian in their contribution to their parliament and to their country. They must also have promoted democracy and good governance within their jurisdiction.

Deputy Rob Ward, Chair of the CPA Jersey Branch Executive Committee said: 'To receive such recognition from the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association is testament to Deputy Raluca Kovacs's hard work and commitment to her role as a States Member. We are immensely proud of her achievement and offer our congratulations.'

In response to receiving the award, Deputy Kovacs said: ‘This is especially important for me, being the first Romanian national elected in a British parliament and serving in an assembly where English is not my first language. I am truly humbled, honoured and very grateful that my contribution to the States Assembly and to the CPA activity has been seen as worthy of such a reward.’
