Jèrriais proposed as an official language of the States
States Assembly
23 January 2019
The States will be asked to decide whether Jèrriais should be made an official language of the States.
Deputy Montfort Tadier has lodged an amendment to a proposition from Deputy Jeremy Macon which asks the Council of Ministers to agree to make Jèrriais a bigger part of Island life by promoting it in the public sector (P.143/2018).
At the moment, both English and French are the official languages of the States. All States business was conducted in French until 1900 when English was permitted.
The matter is due to be debated by the States on 26th February 2019.
