As part of the three-day visit, the BVI delegation received a tour of the States Chamber, given insight into how the Assembly and Scrutiny Panels operate and shadowed the PAC during its Public Hearing on the Joint Ferry Tender process on Wednesday afternoon.
The BVI delegates also took part in a roundtable discussion around the procedures for holding Public Hearings and the legislative framework supporting the scrutiny of public spending.
PAC Chair, Deputy Inna Gardiner, said: ‘It was a pleasure to welcome our colleagues from the BVI to Jersey this week.
‘Effective scrutiny of Government decisions is crucial to the functioning of any democracy, and we were delighted to showcase the ways in which Jersey monitors the spending of public money. The Public Accounts Committee has a crucial role in holding those looking after public finances to account and we were happy to share our knowledge and methods with our friends from the BVI and hope that their visit was beneficial in the carrying out of their own duties.
‘Exchanging ideas with other jurisdictions, particularly smaller jurisdictions similar to Jesey, is vitally important in ensuring that we are evolving to best practice models from around the world to ensure that our functions are continuing to work in the best interests of Islanders.’
