Review of adult ADHD prescription service launched by Scrutiny

The Health and Social Security Scrutiny Panel has launched a review into the current procedures for prescribing ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder) medication for adults, the resilience of supplies and the impact on those who need them. The Panel is calling on Islanders who want to share their experiences, to get in contact.

The Director of Mental Health and Adult Social Care, advised the Panel in March, that due to Jersey's prescribing regulations, and the way medicines are funded, the prescribing of ADHD medications can only be carried out by a consultant psychiatrist. With just one consultant psychiatrist available on Island, this is resulting in them spending 'an extraordinary amount of their time just doing repeat prescriptions.'

Deputy Louise Doublet, Chair of the HSS Panel, said: 'In other jurisdictions, once an individual has been assessed by a specialist, their repeat prescriptions can be managed by their GP. Our current system is putting an inordinate pressure on the one consultant psychiatrist we have available in Jersey and the Panel's concern is that this isn't only impacting staff, but also those who need regular ADHD care. We welcome anyone who has experiences to share on this issue to get in contact with us.'

The Panel will be collecting evidence and experiences from those impacted by these issues, as well as questioning the Minister for Health and Social Services and other Health experts and organisations, during Public Hearings.
