Watch Jersey’s first People’s Debate

States Assembly

26 September 2024

Tax rises, congestion charges and bus lanes will all be debated by 39 Islanders in Jersey's first 'People's Debate' in the States Chamber this Saturday, 28 September 2024.

The event, which is part of Democracy Week, is designed to give people an experience of debating and voting in the States Chamber in the hope that they might consider standing for election as Deputy or Connétable in 2026.

The participants will be discussing a proposition devised by the debate organisers around Jersey's net zero commitments and, while it does not reflect Government plans or policy, organisers believe it will spark a lively and passionate debate.

Jenny O'Brien, Head of Digital and Public Engagement for the States Assembly, said: 'We have spoken to each of our 39 People's Debate participants and found they have a wide range of views and perspectives on the net zero issue. We have landlords within the group who have strong feelings about potential changes to domestic heating systems, and we have other members who believe passionately in active travel and investing in those networks. We hope they enjoy this unique experience, and that their friends, families, and colleagues enjoy watching them.'

The People's Debate will begin at 10am on Saturday 28 September 2024 and is expected to conclude by 1pm.

The public gallery in the States Chamber will be open, as it is for States Meeting, allowing members of the public to watch the debate in person. The public entrance can be found on Halkett Place opposite Morier House.
